  1. This router is the best I have used. Review by killerkeck

This is the best router that I have had the priveledge to own. It is comparitively light and easy to use with a sturdy, powerful motor. It is easy to maneauver around but also easy to keep with the lines when free handing. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  2. Versatile Review by andyp

I have owned this router for many years. I chose this specific model because it includes both a plunge base and a fixed base. Initially I used mostly the plunge base while routing by hand. The plunge base is easy to adjust and the base moves up and down very easily. When the base is down it stays there.

I like that the base feels good in my hands, is easy to operate, and that the router has variable speed. Also, this has more power than many routers of this size and weight, so it is a nice compromise in a router table.

I used the router in a simple router table for many years with good effect. The router adjusts in the table pretty easily (not awesome, but usable). I finally built a router table into my table saw and mounted this router into a router base where the router continues to handle everything that I can throw at it. Disclaimer: I have not yet tried my large panel bits in it, which will be the true test. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  3. Best Router in It's Class Review by Dreamcatcher

I have used a lot of routers from all the major brands (and own several) but this is my favorite full size router. It is extremely powerful, exceptionally accurate, has a reasonably low weight, and very good center of gravity. The depth adjustment on the fixed base is unparalleled and the plunge base is easy to set and plunge. Changing bases is as easy as just twist and slide and I find that the design of the fixed base fits my hand in a certain way that I am able to safely use it one-handed by grabbing the base instead of the handles.

As a con, it is important to keep the metal clean, dry, and thus free of corrosion or it will begin to stick and make motor removal quite difficult.

Take care of this tool and it will last a lifetime. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  4. Powerful and easy to use Review by Jc14lax

I'm fairly new to woodworking and my dad turned me on to this router saying that it was easy to use and could handle any project i would ever do. Bought it for myself for my birthday. As a real novice, i took it home and read through the manual. I've never routed anything. Now, i want to route everything. It's balance is great and I never feel like i'm not in control. My bit collection is expanding with every project I do. I also keep telling my wife that, "I can do that, but i need this bit." great tool, fairly priced. This will definitely make me want to check out other Bosch Tools. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  5. great addition Review by twistedboard

This is the first bosch router I have owned. i recieved it as a gift . i've had it for two weeks .i've made baseboard and trim for our kitchen remodel plus transition pieces for a neighbor and my sister .also several door fronts. It makes freehand work a breeze and on the table with the above table adjustment feature it eliminates all guess work.if your looking for the perfect gift for a handyman-woodworker or a beginer this is it.pair it with a bosch router table and you have some beautiful projects ahead (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  6. Great Router Review by KJG511

Enjoy this router alot. Never has a problem with any task the 1/4" and 1/2" chucks are easy to swap bits out (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  7. Not what I expected Review by TrialandError

I was in the middle of making raised panel doors for cabinets when my router died. I purchased this unit today based on reviews that I read. I found the on/off switch awkward and the lack of led lights make viewing the cuts as I go to be difficult. Out of the box, one of the wooden handle knobs was loose and I can't seem to get it to stay tightened. I have to give credit to the coarse and fine adjustments because they are as accurate as described. The two wrench system for securing bits is also awkward and spindle locks would make the process a whole lot simpler. I was only able to rout one panel and not without splitting the wood along one side of the panel. Thought it might be too slow a speed but slighter faster speed didn't seem to help either. Oak is expensive to replace not to mention the time wasted in making another panel. Hope the store of purchase will take it back. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  8. Works great, easy to use Review by weyoung

All in all this router is a great tool. My only complaint is that the lack of a spindle lock makes changing the bits a little more tedious than it needs to be. Other than that I highly recommend it! (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  9. This a great router kit for a decent price. Review by REDTAIL

I'm very happy with this router kit. I appreciate that Bosch motors are always very high quality. I would rather it be made in Switzerland or the EU. The Bosch sticker was not put on straight, and I did need to tighten up one of the wooden grips. But, other than that, the quality seems to be very good.

The unit works great. Plenty of power for my needs. Good adjustability. Nice case and the array of accessories is good.

I would be nice to add a high-powered light to the unit... Visibility is always a primary issue with routers. You have to be able to see your cutting-lines and the curf...

I like quality tools that last a lifetime and this looks like it will be one! (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  10. Smooth operation Review by BDawg

The router does not try and jump and twist when power is turned on. Had a craftsman router prior to this one, and it was very difficult to control on the wood surface. I do not have this one mounted in a table either, but runs much smoother, and is easily controllable against the wood surface. I am a novice at woodworking, and this router makes it easy to get the desired results. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  11. One Strange Thing Review by BigH

Great Tool! Just a few wishes. I needed to use a guide bushing but I found that I had to remove the fixed base unit from the Bosch cabinet and change the plate since Bosch did not make the plunge and fixed base routers in such a manner to buy a base plate which could be used on either one. It is a pain to have to take out the fixed base part just to route a mouse hole on a shutter. Second, It seems very difficult to separate the motor from the fixed base unit. Maybe it is me, but I have a time getting them separated or reconnected. Other than that this is a GREAT Machine and I would recommend it. The Bosch table is also excellent, however I did find that some parts of the metal had to be filed down. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  12. Quality Review by Carson

Love this router. Easy to adjust and love that it comes with the plunge base. It's high quality and durable. Have been using it for 3 years now and have had no issues with it. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  13. Won't disappoint, feels great in-hand, just needs some clever supporting features to make day-to-day use more practical Review by YdidIgotocollege

Since I purchased this router I have used it nearly daily, often for work I never would have thought would require a router. Basically a lot of little things that could have otherwise become major headaches become small tasks, e.g. someone cuts an asymmetrical piece of siding with the lap-joints on the wrong side, the router can provide a satisfying remedy of the situation without wasting the entire sheet of siding. The point is that a router is a great and highly enabling tool...

With regards to this router combo pack my first impression was amazing, I unpacked it, plugged it in, closed the switch and couldn't resist a smile; the sound of the motor was free of all sorts of harsh noises that most power tools emit and even better, aside from a smooth input of torque at the grips, this tool wasn't vibrating all over the place. Turning up the revs with the dial doesn't change any of this...it gets louder, but in a way that feels linear and controlled. It altogether sounds and feels like a well-made and well-balanced tool, which makes for both pleasant use and more control at the workpiece.

In use it works perfectly. I have had no complaints so far with the way the tool performs. It has done everything I have come up with without flaw. I would, however, add that I am an advocate for design features which make a whole work process smoother...little things like keeping all of the parts for a tool together at a crowded work site. This router pack comes with a good case, but it could be better, e.g. by having a separate closeable sub-compartment to hold the dozen or so hardware pieces required for putting the router under a router table. Also the plastic guard on the fixed-base has to be removed and set down if you want to change bits...small, clear, plastic pieces that get set down at a work site have a way of getting broken or lost. I usually just pop the motor out of the base to make changes to avoid this, it's easy enough and this ease is one of the reasons to applaud this design for doing most things very well.

Overall I would recommend it to anyone who appreciates quality tools and the quality work that they perform. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  14. Subject to corrosion Review by Scott

Initially pleased with the router however recently removed it from its case only to find that the aluminum housing had started to corrode. Not something I had expected as it had always been kept inside and never subjected to a humid environment. As a result, it now is extremely difficult to adjust depths of cut. Will now have to consider a new router even though the motor still functions fine. Too bad as I have never had this problem with any of my other Bosch tools. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  15. Good product with a couple of aggravations Review by Sammy

I like the 1617evspk overall. It is the first good router I have owned so I don't have anything to compare it to. I wish Bosch would have been more up front about the fact that you have to buy an additional attachment to use router jigs. That was an added expense that I didn't anticipate. I just used it under my router table for the first time and found out that none Bosch's dust collection hoods (another extra expense) will work in that situation. Bosch needs to design a hood for under the router table. Other than these two complaints I am very happy with the router and the way it switches between the 2 bases. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  16. Everything you need in a router. Review by Honeydo1

A large cabinet project was the first big test for my new router, and it did awesome! After tackling that large job, building some picture frames and such were nothing but fun. Many great features, and coupled with a table the possibilities are endless. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  17. Does everything well Review by mveach

This router is the product of years of evolution. Along the way, Bosch has kept what worked and changed or improved what did not. The ease of use, changing bases and adjustment don't leave many improvements to be made. As others have said, a work lite would be a plus. Unlike most people, I like the two wrench bit change. The speed control works excellent. The soft start all but eliminates start up torque. If you use guide bushings, the tool free system is nice. Even if you have a screw in style bushing that you use, there is an adapter for it. then you can install it, remove it and reinstall it without having to recenter it. If you can only afford one router, this is it. If you have many, you still need this one. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  18. An excellent tool! Review by Phred

I bought this router mainly for table mount use but the overall comfort level and confidence of use that brings has me using it in the plunge base on a regular basis also. I figure this is about my seventh router and the fifth I have bought new, by far it is the most impressive I have owned. It just simply feels right... balanced, smooth and quite. The features and specs of the tool as well as the items in the pack very closely matched another product I planned on buying, however the Bosch was a far better bargain and I am convinced a better product. I expect to be using this router for many years! (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  19. the '17 rules Review by Stick

this router pretty much sets the standards for the rest of router industry..... (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  20. Excellent router with one major weakness Review by Gilberttribe

I have owned the router for over 6 years now, and have used it extensively at times in and out of a router table. The router is one of those products that just feels like a quality product as soon as you pick it up. The variable speed works well, and the height adjustment is very precise. The motor is adequately strong for a variety of bits and materials. As noted by another user, the switch position is not conveniently placed especially when placed under a router table. Unfortunately, this otherwise excellent router has a major weakness -- the power switch.

When used in a router table, the switch fills with saw dust and eventually stops working, so the router cannot be turned back on. This has happened a number of times, and can be temporarily fixed by removing the dust from the switch. I thought Bosch would have fixed the switch issue by now, so I called customer support, and explained my problem. To my surprise, the customer support person was very reluctant to assist me given the age of the router. I was eventually able to convince the support person to at least send me a new swtich, so I could do the replacement myself. When the new switch arrived, it was exactly like the one already in the unit. It too has failed, which I can temporarily fix by taking apart the router, dumping the dust out of the switch, and reassembling.

I am generally a fan of Bosch tools, and have several other Bosch tools including the excellent glide miter saw. If it weren't for the switch problem, I would rate the router much higher for effectiveness and value. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  21. Excellent Router, the power and precision are there. Review by sacred geometry

The set provides most everything required to get started with more advanced woodworking and more if you are aware of the operating procedures and proper selection of cutting tools.
Most stores I visit have Bosch Cutting tools which I consider superior to the competitions products.
i would like to see more Genuine Bosch accessories available locally.
Some day I will get used to buying online. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  22. As good as it gets Review by gsmittle

I purchased this kit two years ago, and have been using it constantly ever since, both handheld and in a table.

The motor changes easily from the fixed to the plunge base, and the plunge base plunges smoothly and holds firmly when I release the lock lever. The fixed base has never had a problem holding the proper depth and the latch has never come loose. I like the fact that the kit came with two collets, not just a 1/2" collet with adapter.

I haven't found anything this router can't handle. Fit and finish are suberb, and the case hold everything in the kit with space for more accessories.

What would I change? I would prefer that the depth stop turret on the plunge base work in the opposite direction (so it's easier to use a piece of scrap to set depth) and I would like more template guides with the kit. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  23. One of the best tools I owen. Review by John

First I should tell you that I am a old man and not easy to impress, I have been doing woodworking for years, at pressent I have four routers in my shop, and one of them is a Bosch 1617EVSPK. It has all the power that you need for the large bits, but it still feels good in your hands when you are doing fine work. It is easy to set your depth, and it holds your settings, the soft start is great, the plung base is made by people that know how to use tools, not just make them to sell, I can not say anything bad about this tool, I still use my other routers even though they are not made by Bosch but the first tool I reach for when I need a router is the Bosch, I will never buy any other brand form now on. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  24. A solid well made router Review by Dennis

I retired from a high end cabinet shop and the Bosch routers we're consistant performers, we never had one wear out.
Buying this combo kit was a no-brainer for me and so far this router has been excellent.
Plenty of power mounted on my router table or freehand.
With the reliability I saw in the cabinet shop I expect to be using this for a very long time. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  25. Best combo unit I've used. Review by HatintheCatfish

My use of routers is not vast, but from the few I have used this combo kit is very much at the top of my list. Smooth motor, comfortable, good power, quality throughout. I've used more expensive units that haven't preformed as well. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  26. Great Package Review by cbrazik

I have owned this combo for about 8 years now and just love how it always performs. Only had one issue with it stopping and the start/stop switch wouldn't work. Was a newbie and using finewoodworking.com and asked the question on the forum. To my luck, I got a response that told me how to fix it. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  27. This product is just what i needed Review by CHMWood

The 1617EVSPK does exactly what I need it to do. It was a perfect compliment to the 1617EVSTB I was already using. Although the motors are easy to switch, it is more convenient having both a plunge and table router ready to go. I'm glad I invested in this router. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  28. Power and Finesse Review by Koolaid

I am a Superintendant for a large Commercial and Residential General Contractor. We use our tools daily, and specialty tools such as this router kit allows me to use it for many different projects. Its soft start control is must when wood working. The variable speed control allows me to adjust to whatever project I am working on. I have owned this router for 3 years now and have used it for finish woodworking detail, rough plunge cuts in LVL's for custom roof framing and everything in between. Bosch got it right with this kit. I do suggest ordering the Templet guide kit right away. Hard to find locally, and when you need it, you can't wait for it to arrive. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  29. 1617EVSPK Router Combo Review by Kupe

This is a great router set. Out of the box you will notice how smooth the variable speed drive spools up and that there is virtually no kick back due to torque at start up. The kit comes supplied with everything you should need short of bits and a guide. I would have preferred to see the guide in the package. All in all this is a great product for the weekend warrior to the professional. If you take care of it, it will take care of you. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  30. short lifespan Review by bob

bought my first one about 4 1/2 years ago. it died 18 months later. luckily the lumber yard where i have account gave me a new one, even though warranty had expired. the replacement lasted 2 1/2 years.....ded now.

last bosch for me. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  31. Excellent value Review by mike

This is my third router and possibly my last router purchase. Also bought additional # RA1165 for table mounting so not to have to move bases between fixed base and table operation. Motor changes smoothly between bases. Also purchased #RA1126 quick change template guide adapter and # RA1100 template guide adapter to use screw in template guides with this plunge router base plate. Overall great quality, features, and power. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  32. 2nd one in 18 years Review by Bee

The 1st one was bought because of a shop I worked at in the early-mid 90s. all they had were Bosch routers, so when I went out on my own, I bought a Bosch! It never let me down. After 18 yrs it was time, I don't think I'll have the heart to throw the old one away. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  33. Solid and powerful Review by Mox

Extraordinary power compared to any other router I've owned. Yet the graduated startup makes it controllable, smooth. A solid product. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  34. Powerful, versatile, and easy to use, but the power switch is garbage. Review by bsandnes

I've had this router for about 6 months and have given it some considerable use both hand-held and in my router table. It has had enough power for any of the operations that I have attempted thus far. Both bases are well made and adjust easily. My only problem thus far has been the power switch, which filled with dust a few weeks back , causing the router to not turn on. I disassembled the top half of the router to remove the power switch and clean it out. This is a simple, avoidable problem that I am astonished to have run into on an otherwise good quality tool. I can't understand why Bosch would under-engineer the power switch on a tool like this. I suspect that I'll be cleaning this switch out every few months as it clogs up again. I am not looking forward to this. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  35. amazing tool Review by hockeynut

This is my first router. I got it to do hinge mortises since I am replacing some bedroom doors. I agree with all the positive things the other reviews say. It seems the switch problem has been fixed. I got the dust extraction kit after using it a few times and throwing dust all over my workshop, and would consider that a must have additional purchase. It is not very noisy even at top speed. It's easy to handle, even with a vacuum hose attached. The carrying case is great, even has room for templates and router bits. Unfortunately does not have room for the dust extraction attachments. There is a little play in the fine adjustment for depth on the fixed base, just need to be aware of it when setting. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  36. Great funcionality in my new router table Review by Joe Cool

I wanted a router that would function effectively with my new router table. What sold me was the quick method that the static height of the router can be adjusted. Having the ability to set the exact height of the router from the top of the table greatly enhances my enjoyment of the router's use. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  37. Workhorse Router Review by Steve

I have used this router extensively while making a few pieces of furniture. Switching bases is very easy. Also, having both 1/4 and 1/2" collets let's me use all of my router bits. The power and consistency are great for furniture. I have used table edge bits on 3/4" oak with no problem at all, and got great looking finish on everything. I couldn't be happier with this tool. 39. Smooth Operation Review by Malcolm

I love the quality and ease of use. I bought the  router to install custom trim to six new windows in my home. I wish retailers would carry the accessories to this unit. Hard to buy online without touching and viewing for quality control. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  42. Easy to adjust router, but lacking features Review by ANG140

I bought this router for several features which are as advertised and a plus for the router
-soft start, variable speed, good power with auto circuitry, easy change base, and micro adjustment. On the minus side - no light, no trigger on (switch is hard to get to when using by hand. Also the micro adjustment is held on to the adjustment screw with one c-clip, which can fall off.. I guess I would rate 3.5 stars for this reason. I felt that the router was a little overpriced with out these features. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  43. Well designed and smooth operations Review by MEMick

Purchased this to replace an aged 1.75 HP single speed router. It didn't take but a few hours of use to see the difference. The insert and removal is very easy, smooth, and positive in positioning between the bases. I really like the plunge base but seem to use the fixed more. I made a router table using the fixed base and the height adjustment for both rough and fine are quite easy to use in the bottom up position. I am new to a variable speed and have played with it on a variety of bits. It does make a noticeable difference when using a wide bit at a lower speed. I have found that cut control can be made easier with this feature. One feature that I had on my past router was a trigger which is missing from this router. I found that I like not having the trigger as I can focus completely on the router and not think about holding onto the trigger. Not sure I would op for this feature again. The 1617 is produces very low noise. What I have found somewhat of a surprise is how nice the ball knob fix base handles and the controlled feel in making template cuts. I truly enjoy using this tool. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  44. Great router Review by causticforever

I bought this router a coupe of weeks ago to use to make channels and also do half-blind dovetails.  The router is easy to use and it is easy to make adjustments. Switching from the fixed based to the plunge base is also hassle-free.  (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  45. The 1617EVSPK is a fantastic router Review by SABidz

Best of the three routers that I own. Typical Bosch super quality, attention to detail, and cutting precision. It's dedicated to my Router Table, but it's very easy to switch the motor over to the "plunger" for hand-held work. Thanks for such a professional tool! (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  46. great, versatile tool Review by bobohead

My first plunge router, and the first router I actually purchased myself (previously had inherited one). The variable speed is very helpful. I've used it on a half dozen projects and it has worked very well. Depth gauge especially easy to use. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  47. Great Router for the Money Review by iefjdkdsle

I purchased this router for a deck project. Routing hand rails, end of deck boards, some other custom trim work. So far the router seam to be hold up and has plenty of power. I've used one other router and it did not last but a few days, and this router has been going strong for a few weeks. My only complaint is the plunge router base does not plunge smoothly. My other router plunge base was really smooth. I was very impressed with the case that came with the router. It has lots of room for router accessories. (Posted on 9/26/2013)

  48. Great Value; A Quality Tool; Flexible Design Review by nhowardtx

I am new to this type of woodworking. I purchased the Bosch router combo because it had both a fixed and plunge router body to go with the motor. Another reason that I purchased the Bosch was that it had a nice router table (RA 1171) which I also purchased later. This table required no complex adapters to use. I found the table to be mandatory for the type of work (cabinetry) that I was doing. It was a piece of cake to assemble and install the router in the table. Also, the tools were all available locally and immediately from Lowe's, so I didn't have to wait and could see the tools, handle them and know exactly what I was getting before purchase.

I liked the flexibility of the fixed and plunge routers, 1/4" and 1/2" collets and easily switchable and adjustable (height and speed) motor.

The fixed router worked great with the router table. I was able to do manual plunge cuts for a hidden biscuit joint in soft wood without problems and chamfered edge easily. (Posted on 9/26/2013)
